This guide accompanies the first company walk-through in two steps: first, Technique 1 builds a holistic, systems-theory view of the system; then, following Technique 2, you fill the six phases of the core methodology with the information you have gathered. Each card can be marked as "done"; at the end you export a structured report.
Starting point of the walk-through.
7 dimensions – first the holistic view, then measures.
Before you derive any measures, gain the holistic view. Work through the seven dimensions in order – use the guiding questions and answer as many as possible concretely in relation to the mandate.
6 phases – with the system picture in mind.
With the systems-theory picture in mind, you work through the six phases. On the first walk-through the focus is usually on the first three phases – for the following ones you note down initial hypotheses.
What is covered, what is missing – and what belongs in the report as an open question.
The core knowledge about the first walk-through – from the tool, the course plan and the course description, supplemented by background. Click a question.
The subject area of this tool as a linked cloud of points: techniques, cards, phases and technical terms. Points with + expand, lines show connections – for instance which card uses which term. Via "Load further tool network" you can add the networks of other course tools; shared terms link the clouds.
The most important terms in this guide:
Everything saves itself. Every change is saved after a few seconds – "Saved" at the top shows that all is well. You do not need a Save button; Ctrl+S still saves immediately.
Templates stay unchanged. If you open a template and enter something, the tool automatically creates your own walk-through. You change the title directly in the title field at the top; you will find all walk-throughs under "Walk-throughs".
Undo and redo: The arrows next to the status display revert or restore changes – also with Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y (Mac: ⌘Z and ⇧⌘Z).
History: In addition to continuous saving, the tool keeps earlier versions – when opening, at most every 10 minutes while you work, and whenever you name a version yourself. There you can compare, restore (this too can be undone with Ctrl+Z) or create a version as a new walk-through.
Writing: In the text fields you write as in a word processor – with headings, lists, checklists, tables, quotes, arrows and symbols. The toolbar appears while you write; with / you open all commands. When typing, -> becomes →.
Attachments: Photos and files – such as an Excel list from the client – can simply be dragged into the text field. They travel with the HTML file; photos are reduced in size for this. For many or large files there is the ZIP folder under "File" with the "Anhaenge" folder.
This HTML file is your document. All walk-throughs, attachments and the history are inside it. Under "File → Save to own file …" you choose a location once; after that the tool writes every change there automatically (Chrome and Edge). In Firefox and Safari the same command downloads the file – open that file from then on.
If something goes wrong: The tool continuously keeps an interim state in the browser. If the browser crashes, your work is back the next time you open it.
